Aktar at Home FAQs

Our Food & Cooking Help

Our larger set boxes with a variety of 8 dishes should either keep your freezer full to eat over time or serve a group of 6 to 8 people. The mini boxes with 4 curries should serve around 2-4 people depending on your appetite.

Each curry is designed to serve 2 hungry people with 600g of food – 300g of pure protein minimum.

We blast freeze each dish to quickly lock in flavour but means on delivery, they can stay in the freezer for up to 3 months (individual best before dates can be found on the trays)! Alternatively, once defrosted all the food is fine in the fridge for three days after delivery.

All of our dishes are super fresh and made with no additives or artificial preservatives.

Our set boxes are a rotating selection but we also have a pick your own option to add as many dishes as you like if you have your own favourites.

We follow authentic recipes that have developed over hundreds and sometimes thousands of years with no shortcuts. We love the British Curry Industry who have shown the great British tradition of embracing other cultures. However, the modern British curry is not a fair reflection of the incredible flavour of authentic Indian home cooking! The style is different and loses its depth of flavour. It’s the difference between a frozen pizza and having an authentic pizza in Rome.

From the offset, we don’t want anybody to worry about what they are receiving. We have made our dishes as dietary friendly as possible with significant vegan options. We also avoid all gluten and nuts in our curry dishes.

Our kitchen is state of the art and our production schedule ensures that each style of dish is prepared on separate days to avoid cross contamination as best we can. Our prawn curry will be prepared separately from everything else. Each protein dish is prepared separately. Our vegetarian dishes are prepared on separate days too. We don’t want you to worry.

Each dish has full microbiological testing in the info section while ordering as well as a summary of dietaries. This is also in your confirmation e-mail when your order is made!

We’d advice defrosting fully before heating your curries up. For the leg of lamb in our GBM Lamb box this is best done in the fridge overnight. We would not recommend re-freezing anything that has already been fully defrosted and/or re-heated, but popping in the fridge is fine!

For best results we advise using a pan on the hob until your curry is piping hot.

Brush with butter or oil and place under the grill until browned to the colour of your choosing for a crisper finish, or alternatively you can warm through in the oven/microwave wrapped in a damp cloth for a softer fluffier finish.

Ping in the microwave until piping hot.

Our Samosas need cooking and for the best and most authentic result we advise shallow or deep frying until crisp and golden.

Our curry trays are made from 90% renewable materials and are oven safe up to 180°C (please remove the film lid first), as well as being microwave safe.

Head to our Instructions & Allergens page to view all of our preparation guidelines.

All our curries are blast frozen before being sent out to lock in flavour and freshness. On the rare occasions that we do have to supplement stock and cook on the day of shipment some of the curries may be delivered fresh and chilled rather than frozen, these will be clearly marked with a sticker. Anything sent fresh can still be stored in exactly the same way as its frozen counterparts.

All our curries are suitable for a Halal diet.

Delivery & what happens next

We use a dedicated overnight service with a delivery partner working alongside DHL who monitor every delivery from the minute it leaves our kitchen, to the depot and to your front door.

You will receive a predicted delivery slot from DHL on the morning of delivery, but our team will be in touch should there be any issues highlighted as early as possible for delays!

Each box is carefully picked by hand with a dedicated team and delivered with a fibre insulated box to act like a fridge in transit now using dry ice to ensure the box remains super cold during its delivery!

If you live in the UK, chances are we will deliver to you! We offer delivery to all mainland UK and a Royal Mail service if necessary to the islands. Northern Ireland is massively on our agenda and will be coming soon.

For the outskirts and more remote areas, we have been delivering to you for five years. In certain remote areas (Isle of Skye etc), it can depend on ferry schedules but with our insulation and dry ice, the boxes are designed to easily cope with a two day transit schedule if there is a delay!

All of our set boxes (such as the Mixed box) are packed to fit snugly within one shipping box, for which DHL charges a flat fee per box to deliver. If your order exceeds this amount it will be packed in additional boxes (incurring additional postage). Unfortunately, DHL does not allow for combined postage even if it is going to the same address.

Packaging

Your delivery will come in a fibre insulated box to act like a fridge in transit, plus the addition of dry ice to ensure the box remains super cold during its delivery!

Our cardboard trays and boxes are widely recycled. Please check with your local council guidelines regards the recycling of our trays.

Problems with Deliveries

Over the last 5 years, we have tried to solve every possible problem with delivery. Recently moving to a new fibre insulated box that keeps the contents chilled longer and adding a kilogram of packaged dry ice to the box to make sure the temperature is as cold as possible.

Delays can happen so we advise our guests to order a day or two head for super special occasions but if there is a delay, the box is designed to still stay cold for an additional day’s delivery. If you do have any concerns about your delivery please do contact us directly via our Contact section we are happy to help!

Provided there are still some ice-crystals present in the curry or it is no more than 4 degrees upon arrival then it is safe to freeze, even if some defrosting has occurred. As we are constantly producing food, occasionally we only have time to chill before our courier comes to pick up (any sent fresh will be marked with a sticker), but these items are still safe to freeze at home.

Placing and amending my order

We keep our delivery diary open up until the end of the year, allowing you to schedule your delivery for whenever suits best!

To allow for packing and processing the cut off for ordering is three days before chosen delivery date, we then ship using DHL’s next day service.

Sadly we can’t select specific delivery times with DHL (only the date). However on the morning of delivery you should get your 1-hour ETA from DHL.

Unfortunately once your order is processing we cannot add to or amend it, apologies! If you do need to reschedule your box or change the delivery address we may be able to accommodate and it is best for you to email in via our Contact section

Currently this isn’t an option, however if you are looking to give an Aktar@Home box as a gift you may be interested in one of our gift cards, which have an option for adding a note to the recipient.

Sadly just due to the way that we pack and process amendments it is not possible for us to accept amendments to our set boxes at this point. We do have lots of lovely individual curries and sides available though if you would like to build your own box.

If for any reason you do need to cancel your order please contact us directly via our Contact section.

We do now offer an Event Catering range suitable for larger gatherings. Please email us directly for more information.

Our product is not VAT-able and therefore we are not able to offer VAT invoices. We are still happy to send over a PDF invoice for you through if you require.

Gift Vouchers

Yes! You can redeem any remaining gift card value on a new order, by imputing your 16-digit gift card code at the checkout.

Our gift vouchers are valid for 12 months from order date.

It’s worth double checking the 16-digit gift voucher code is being added to the gift voucher, rather than the coupon section of the checkout (sadly they aren’t interchangeable). If the issue persists, please contact us via our Contact section and one of the team will be happy to assist!

We have a dedicated team monitoring our e-mails Monday to Friday. Please try to avoid calling Opheem itself as the restaurant is separate to our Home service but a dedicated line for emergency queries will be coming soon
